Ministry with children and young people is a challenge, a privilege and a buzz.
Young people are not simply a part of the church of tomorrow; they are also part of the church of today.

Youth & children's ministry has many facets

  • pastoral support of young people and their families
  • leading worship and prayer times
  • preparing and leading small group Bible studies and discussions
  • understanding the changes and stages that young people go through
  • helping young people grow as disciples
  • connecting with schools ministry
  • running games and recreation activities
  • involving children and youth in service and justice programs
  • camps, retreats and mission trips
  • building and working with a leadership team
  • finding resources, fund-raising

Many people of all ages serve in these areas of ministry in a voluntary capacity. Some are employed as part-time or full-time children, youth or family workers in congregations, some as school chaplains, others with church agencies. The Uniting Church has had a specified ministry of youth worker for several years, however this lay ministry will come within a new lay ministry of Pastor from 2008. Workers in children and family ministry roles may also be appointed as Pastors.

You can gain vital knowledge and skills in these and other areas over time through connecting with learning opportunities and finding time to spend with a mentor. Here are some particular learning opportunities to explore.
